Here are some notes from Wednesday’s Eastern Michigan football practice:
-- It was the last of two-a-day practices and, naturally, it was a rainy day. “This was a good, last double-day,” First-year coach Ron English said. “I thought the guys had good emotion, good intensity. I thought we got a lot out of it.”
-- Again, English seemed to be keeping a close eye on the secondary, but when questioned he downplayed that. “Not necessarily,” he said, “but the coaches let me coach a little bit, and I like coaching individuals so they give me a chance and I do it.”
He’s participated in five Eastern Michigan football camps, but today’s opening practice was different than any of the previous.
Fifth-year senior Andy Schmitt is a seasoned vet when it comes to quarterbacking the Eagles. This season, however, it will be his only without former coach Jeff Genyk running the show.
Schmitt is No. 1 on the depth chart and has been studying new coach Ron English’s and offensive coordinator Ken Karcher’s playbook since March. Genyk, who was fired in November 2008 after five seasons, ran a spread offense. This season, EMU will run a pro-style offense.
This is the last issue of the Eastern Echo for spring semester, and the editors would like to thank you again for picking up our paper and for participating in the online version at EasternEcho.com. It’s been a great year, but for Echo readers it’s going to get better yet!
Although the Echo is taking the rest of the summer off, we are looking forward to returning this fall with new energy, new voices, and even a brand new look in our print and online editions.
